If there is one thing I know about, I know about being broke. I have mastered the art and passed the exam of being a qualified broke 20-something-year-old.
But I've learned over the years is, that no matter the size of your wallet (or overdraft), you can still possibly look a million bucks if you learn a few tricks of the trade.
My first trick is possibly one of those really hard ones to commit to, especially when you've just seen the most perfect bell sleeve top on the high street for a bargain price. Instead of buying the bargain, why don't you save for the better one? I know, what the hell is that logic? Trust me I've learnt from my own experience while being broke over Christmas. All I wanted was the perfect puffer coat and I was bombarded with choices, though the price was affordable the quality was what I was really after. When you're broke bargains seem rather rubbish if the quality is subpar, so instead of me buying a generic more affordable puffer, I saved up a little bit longer and found a better quality one. This trick always works in the long run, because you're choosing quality and a few added years onto the wear.
(Zara always good quality)
Another cool trick is the ability to fashion forecast and not buy into the latest trends. When you're broke shopping for clothes isn't something you will always have the luxury of doing. So just because everyone is buying metallic sliders right now, doesn't mean you should. When you're broke you have absolutely no business shopping for the latest trends, when tomorrow the latest trend is on the 'Not' list for what's hot or not. Learning how to buy pieces that will last more than two seasons is always a trick you should know. You can master this trick with a little bit of knowledge of fashion forecasting – check out forecasting geniuses wgsn. To become your own fashion forecaster, keep up-to-date with what's on the runway – check out the patterns, the cuts and the types of styles designers are putting out and see if you can mimic that. Having a nose around on Instagram – I know fashion bloggers can be an either hit-or-miss, but it won't harm having a look, also Pinterest is great for making your own fashion board. Once you've got some information to go back on, you can shop accordingly.

So you've probably heard it before, but buying second hand/vintage is a great way to keep on trend while saving a bob or two. Ebay is my best friend, I literally search the pages for ages trying to bid for items that I think would compliment my wardrobe. Finding good items is key, so always look for items/brands you've bought from in the past. Because quality is key, remember. Broke people want things to last. If you can't stand online shops and you're more of a touchy/feely person, go to your local Oxfam or charity store and find gems. The best gems are found in the most unlikely places.
My last bit of broke-trick is borrowing clothes from your friends and family. I can't vouch for this, but I've known people who've done this and if you've got friends around the same size as you, you might as well ask if you can borrow their distressed jeans you've been eyeing. Though I may not have borrowed from a friend, I know I practically live in my mother's accessory collection and the best thing about it I don't have to spend a dime. Just make sure you keep those pieces in stellar condition, no drama on bubbled jumpers here.
Over the years these few tricks have helped me and I hope through the money depression you might be going through, there is hope for your wardrobe.
